When people look at your home, they see your siding, your windows, your roof, and your front door. While your front door may be the smallest of the bunch, it can make a big impression. If your front door is outdated, damaged, or simply an eyesore, let our door installation experts help. Here, we offer four ways you can update your front door and ultimately, the look of your home.
Over time, things like rain, UV rays, hail, and even wind can cause your front door’s paint to peel, fade, or bubble. The good news is you can update the look of your door with a new coat of paint. You can choose to stick with the same color or be adventurous and choose something new.
If you’re choosing something new, gather some paint chips from your local home improvement department and tape them to your door to see which color works best with the exterior of your home. Then, use sandpaper to remove any imperfections and choose a clear, sunny day with mild temperatures to prime and paint your door.
Even though it’s a small part of your front door, hardware can make a big difference in how it looks. If you currently have a simple doorknob and escutcheon, consider something more decorative. Whether it’s brushed nickel, oil-rubbed bronze, an antique design, or something totally modern, look for a door handle that complements the style of your home.
Once you decide, you’ll want to remove the old door handle and locking hardware. Replace your strike and latch plates with our new ones, then install the exterior handle and secure the interior hardware. If you really want a classic look, you can even install a matching knocker.
If you don’t want to paint your door or update your hardware, you can always stay simple and choose accessories to spruce up your front door space. Consider adding a decorative knocker or a homemade wreath to your door. Or, you can choose ornamental lights (such as sconces or lanterns) to install on either side to brighten the area. You can also consider adding some standing plants or shrubbery to create a natural frame for your door.
If you really want to update your front door, why not replace it entirely? At PJ Fitzpatrick, we offer a variety of front doors in a variety of materials. Whether you’re looking for a traditional fiberglass door, or a decorative stile & rail door, we can help. We’ll discuss the look you want as well as your noise and energy needs, then recommend a style that’s best for you. Once you decide what you’d like, we’ll complete your door installation quickly so you can enjoy the new look to your home.
