Cleaning Your Gutters As Winter Arrives

Roof Gutters Must Be Cleaned Before The Cold Season Arrives

Owning a house can require a lot of effort in preparing it for the winter season.  You need to ensure that your house is properly protected against the harsh effects of the cold weather.

The accumulation of water in roof gutters can lead to ice buildup, which can lead to a lot of extra weight and stress on your gutters.  If your gutters get full of ice, you might notice a waterfall type effect due to the water flowing over the gutter, which can result in damage to your siding, and cause leaks in basements.  This is why it is very important to make sure that your roof is clear and does not have any scope for water accumulation.

You will know that your gutter is clogged if you notice that:

  • Your gutters are pulled away from the roofline.
  • Soil-splash stains on building walls or below the downspout.
  • Eroded soil below the downspout.

Here are a few tips that might be useful to you when cleaning your gutters.

Be careful with the ladder. Cleaning the roof gutter requires you to climb a ladder and you need to take precaution when doing so.  Keep someone informed that you are working with the ladder, just in case of an accident.

Focus on the right places. Before starting off with the gutter-cleaning, you need to chalk out a plan of where to start and where to end. This is important and can help in making things easier for you, as well as saving you time.
