Atlantic hurricane season lasts from June to November, with the peak season from mid-August to late October. Hurricanes can cause catastrophic damage and the resulting storm surges along the coast can even cause extensive damage from heavy rainfall. We have already had historical records for rainfall this year. Floods and flying debris from the excessive winds are often the deadly and destructive results of these weather events.
Your roof takes the brunt of a hurricane, which can have winds in excess of 155 mph.
These winds exert an uplift effect that can pull off roof shingles, tiles, or even the underlying roof deck. A well-maintained roof is better able to fend off high hurricane winds.
Do an up-close inspection of your roof. We recommend that you hire a professional roof inspector to check your roof. A professional will look for curled, loose, or missing shingles, paying particular attention to the edges of the roof. These weak spots allow high winds to work loose other shingles—a domino effect that could really wreak havoc.
Check your attic. If you have access to your attic, inspect the roof from the inside as well. First, look at the plywood or underlayment. Look for stains, dark wood spots or rusty nails. These can indicate leaks or mold growth. Look at the current insulation to see if you see any dark spots or growth. This too could indicate a moisture problem that could be related to the roof failing. Again, we recommend hiring a professional, they’ll have the expertise to know how to look for water spots from leaks, moisture, mold or growth.
