While vinyl siding is incredibly durable and long-lasting, it can be damaged by debris, weather, and other incidents. Luckily, repairing it is relatively easy and if you’re a DIY-er, we can show you how to do it. All you’ll need is a few supplies and some patience. Here’s how to repair vinyl siding:
Small Piece
If you have a small piece of siding that needs replaced, you can simply apply a siding “patch” to the area to fix it.
- Insert a wooden shim into the bottom of the damaged piece of siding to prop it up. Then, use a zip tool to unlock the siding from the piece next to it.
- Repeat the previous step for the top of the siding piece.
- Use tin snips to make clean cuts around the damaged siding and remove it.
- Use a table saw or circular saw to cut a new piece of vinyl siding. Make sure this piece is slightly larger than the piece you removed.
- Lay a bead of caulk along the back of the patch and set the patch into place. Then, lock the siding back into place.
Large Piece
If a larger piece of siding is damaged and needs replaced, follow these steps:
- Insert a wooden shim into the bottom of the damaged piece of siding to prop it up. Then, use a zip tool to unlock the siding from the piece next to it.
- Repeat the previous step for the top of the siding piece.
- Use a crowbar to pry up any nails that were used to attach the piece of siding.
- Remove the damaged piece of siding.
- If your new piece of siding is larger than the piece you removed, use a table saw or circular saw to cut it to the same length.
- Slide the new piece into the opening and snap the top part into place.
- Secure the new piece with a few nails and snap the bottom into place.
