Hardie Panel Vertical Siding

HARDIE® PANEL VERTICAL SIDING INSTALLATION

BOARD-AND-BATTEN CHARACTER IN DURABLE FIBER CEMENT

Vertical siding has come a long way from the barns it started on. Hardie® Panel vertical siding gives your home strong upward lines that make it feel taller and more deliberate, and it’s become the defining look of the modern farmhouse—especially when it’s paired with HardieTrim® battens for a true board-and-batten finish.

PJ Fitzpatrick installs Hardie® Panel across our service area, both as a whole-home cladding and as an accent on gables, entryways, dormers, and garages. The panels are 5/16 inch thick fiber cement in 4×8, 4×9, and 4×10 foot sheets, which means fewer seams across a wall than lap siding and a cleaner overall look. Call 1-877-246-4354 today to talk through your vertical siding options.

Why Choose hardie Panel Vertical Siding

Why Homeowners Choose Hardie® Panel

  • Vertical Lines:Draws the eye upward and makes a home read taller and more striking.
  • Board-and-Batten:Pairs with HardieTrim® battens for the modern farmhouse look.
  • Large Format:4×8, 4×9, and 4×10 panels mean fewer seams across the wall.
  • Four Textures:Select Cedarmill®, Smooth, Stucco, and Sierra 8 grooved.
  • Mixes Well:Works beautifully alongside lap siding or shake on the same home.
  • Moisture Resistant:Fiber cement won’t rot, swell, or warp like wood paneling.
  • Noncombustible:Hardie® fiber cement will not burn and holds no appeal for pests.
  • Strong Warranty:Backed by a 30-year non-prorated, limited transferable substrate warranty.

Four Textures to Choose From

Hardie® Panel comes in four textures, and each one takes your exterior somewhere different.

Select Cedarmill® carries a grooved woodgrain that reads as vertical cedar paneling from the curb. It’s the warmest of the four and looks especially good on ranches and craftsman homes, or paired with stone and brick.

Smooth is a flat, grain-free surface. Clean and contemporary, it’s the go-to for modern builds and for board-and-batten applications where you want the battens themselves to provide all the texture.

Stucco mimics the look of traditional troweled stucco without the cracking, staining, and water damage that real stucco is prone to. A strong fit for Spanish, Mediterranean, and southwestern-influenced homes.

Sierra 8 combines a natural woodgrain texture with vertical grooves spaced across the panel, adding built-in linear detailing without any additional trim work.

Select Cedarmill® and Smooth are offered in Statement Collection® colors with ColorPlus® Technology, and all four textures are available primed for paint. Texture and color availability varies by market—we’ll bring samples to your estimate and show you exactly what we can get for your home.

Modern Hardie Panel Vertical Siding Installations

Creating the Board-and-Batten Look

Board-and-batten isn’t a single product—it’s an assembly. We install Hardie® Panel as the base layer, then apply HardieTrim® battens vertically over the panel joints at regular intervals. The spacing you choose changes the whole character of the wall: battens set close together read as tighter and more traditional, while wider spacing feels more contemporary and lets the panel surface show.

Panel layout matters just as much as batten spacing. We plan the courses so joints fall where they should, keep horizontal joints between floors rather than bridging them, and align grooves at story and gable transitions on Sierra 8 installations. Those are the details that separate a board-and-batten wall that looks designed from one that looks improvised. See the rest of the James Hardie lineup.

Mixing Vertical Siding with Other Styles

Some of the best exteriors we install don’t commit to one profile. Vertical panel on the gables above Hardie® Plank lap siding, or board-and-batten on a front entry with Hardie® Shingle elsewhere, gives a home depth and definition that a single material can’t. Because everything comes from the same product family in the same Statement Collection® colors, the combinations read as intentional rather than mismatched.
