For years, Jeanette Roberts avoided her own bathroom.
She’d walk past it with the shower curtains pulled shut on both sides. Not for privacy, but to hide what was underneath. A worn blue tub. Crumbling walls. Mold she could smell before she ever saw it. “It was horrible,” she explained. “My walls were falling apart… I had shower curtains on one side and the other side so I wouldn’t have to look at it.
It’s a familiar story. What looks like a cosmetic problem is often something much bigger, and it’s easy to let another year pass rather than deal with it. Jeanette let a lot of years pass, and then she decided it was time.
When the old shower finally came out, so too did the truth. A hole in the wall and the unmistakable smell of mold that had been building for who knows how long poured out. Our installation team didn’t just cover it up. They rebuilt the shower from the base, replacing everything that was damaged and then some: repairing a damaged access panel that wasn’t even part of the job, adding an extra shower caddy, coordinating extra plumbing work when an unexpected issue turned up along the way.
“They just went over and above,” Jeanette said.
That same generosity carried through the whole project and it’s what stuck with Jeanette most, more than the tile or the fixtures.
“They felt like they were my sons,” she said, going on to describe feeling so comfortable that she and her husband left the installers alone in their home, unsupervised, something she’s never done for anyone. She continued, “I don’t let anyone in my house, but with them—that’s how secure I was.”
She was kept in the loop on permits and scheduling the entire time. Even when her schedule got tight, the team came out on a Saturday to make it work.
As is inevitable, money was part of the conversation too, but not in the way she expected. Nobody tried to sell her on the most expensive package. Instead, the question was simpler: what could they build within the budget she actually had?
“They worked with us,” she said, recounting how she had braced herself for the throes of financing, which turned out to be done almost instantly. “They literally—while they were talking to us, we were financed.”
The bathroom that came out of this renovation looks nothing like the one she used to actively hide from. A built-in bench, rainfall showerhead, handheld sprayer, all surrounded with décor she picked out to make the space her own oasis. “I love this bathroom now. It’s a spa, I made it my spa!”
No longer is her bathroom a room she quickly passes through. Now it’s where she unwinds after work, soothes sore muscles after a workout, and steals a few quiet minutes in a day that wouldn’t usually offer them. “I’ll sit in the chair and just let the water run,” she said with a smile stretching across her face. “It feels so good.”
But it wasn’t until she actually stepped into that new shower for the first time, after decades of waiting, that it really hit her. She cried.
“I hadn’t been able to take a hot shower and be comfortable in a very long time,” she said. “It was a blessing.”
It’s easy to underestimate how much a worn-out bathroom quietly wears on you, until the day it’s gone. A space you use every single day should be comfortable, functional, somewhere you actually want to spend the time. Which is exactly the ideology behind our mission to Make Life Better One Home At A Time.
Jeanette’s advice for anyone else putting off a renovation was simple: “Don’t wait 30 years. Do it now.”
Whether it’s visible damage, outdated fixtures, or a bathroom that just doesn’t fit your life anymore, waiting tends to let small problems turn into much bigger ones. A professionally done remodel isn’t only about how the room looks. It can restore comfort, clear out hidden issues, and give you a space you’ll actually enjoy every day. Or, as Jeanette puts it, “Treat yourself to a nice bathroom. It makes a difference.”
If your bathroom is showing its age or you’ve been putting off a remodel for years like Jeanette did, PJ Fitzpatrick can help. From your first consultation to the final walkthrough, our team works with you to design a shower or tub that fits your home, your budget, and your life.
Because every homeowner deserves a bathroom they actually look forward to using.
