How to Repair a Drafty Front Door

A drafty front door can make your home uncomfortable and cause your heating and cooling system to work harder, leading to higher energy bills. Fortunately, repairing a drafty front door is a project that most homeowners can tackle with some basic tools and supplies. By sealing gaps and improving insulation around your entryway, you’ll keep your home more comfortable year-round.

Step-by-Step Instructions to Repair Your Door

  1. Inspect the Door
    1. Look for visible gaps around the sides, top, and bottom.
    2. Check if light is coming through on a sunny day.
    3. Take note of worn weatherstripping, warped wood, or gaps at the threshold.
  2. Replace Worn Weatherstripping
    1. Remove any old or damaged strips.
    2. Clean the surface thoroughly.
    3. Measure and cut the new weatherstripping to size.
    4. Attach it to the frame and test the door to ensure a snug seal.
  3. Install a Door Sweep
    1. Measure the width of your door and cut the sweep to fit.
    2. Secure it with screws or adhesive.
    3. Make sure it touches the floor or threshold but doesn’t block the door from opening.
  4. Seal Cracks with Caulk
    1. Apply caulk along small gaps between the frame and wall.
    2. Smooth it with your finger or a caulk tool.
    3. For larger gaps, use expanding spray foam for better insulation.
  5. Repair Damaged Wood
    1. Fill cracks or holes in the frame with wood filler.
    2. Let it dry, then sand it smooth.
    3. Repaint or stain the repaired area to match.
  6. Adjust Hinges and Latch
    1. Tighten loose hinge screws.
    2. Adjust the latch if needed so the door closes flush within the frame.
  7. Test the Seal Around the Door
    1. Close the door and check for airflow by holding a lit candle or incense stick near the edges.
    2. If the flame flickers or smoke moves, add more caulk or weatherstripping.
