How To Install A Gutter Drip Edge

A drip edge is a vital yet often overlooked part of your roofing system. This simple strip of material plays a crucial role in protecting your home from water damage and prolonging the life of your roof. Here’s a quick guide on how to install a drip edge.

Step-by-Step Guide to Installing a Drip Edge

If you’re uncomfortable working on your roof, consider hiring a professional. However, many homeowners can manage this as a DIY project. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  1. Inspect the roof edge for any damage or rot.
  2. Remove any debris or old roofing materials.
  3. Ensure the edge is straight and level.
  4. Use a chalk line to mark a straight guide if needed.
  5. Start at a corner of the roof.
  6. Slide the wide flange of the drip edge under the first course of shingles.
  7. Ensure the outer edge extends beyond the fascia board by about ¾ inch.
  8. If it doesn’t, adjust the drip edge accordingly.
  9. At corners, overlap pieces by about 2 inches for a watertight seal.
  10. Use 45-degree miter cuts for neat joints.
  11. Apply a continuous bead of roofing cement along the top of the drip edge.
  12. Press down on the shingles.
  13. Nail the drip edge in place with roofing nails every 12 inches.
  14. Ensure the nails are straight and flush with the surface.

If installing a drip edge as part of a new roof or re-roofing project:

  1. Place it under the felt at the eaves.
  2. Place it over the felt at the rakes.
