A new shower head is an inexpensive investment and can give your shower a whole new look. Whether your current shower head is old or damaged or you simply want to update it, our shower head installation experts tell you how to. We review removing the old shower head and installing either a fixed shower head, hand-held shower head, or combination shower head:
Removing the old shower head:
- First, our shower head installation experts recommend placing an old towel at the bottom of your bath tub to protect it.
- Turn your existing shower head counter-clockwise to unscrew it. If it doesn’t loosen:
- Use a pair of adjustable pliers to remove the old shower head. (If you don’t want to scratch the finish, wrap your pliers in tape.)
- Finally, clean off the shower arm and remove any Teflon tape left behind.
Installing a fixed shower head:
- First, attach your fixed shower head by screwing it onto the the shower arm.
- Tighten it down as much as possible.
- Finally, turn on the water and check for leaks.
- If you find a leak, our shower head installation experts recommend wrapping some Teflon tape over the shower arm threads and tightening down with your pliers.
Installing a hand-held shower head:
- First, attach your hand-held shower head mount by screwing it onto the shower arm.
- Tighten it down as much as possible.
- Next, connect the flexible shower hose to the mount.
- After that, connect the shower head to the exposed end of the shower hose.
- Place the shower head into the mount.
- Finally, turn on the water and check for leaks.
- If you find a leak, our shower head installation experts recommend wrapping some Teflon tape over the shower arm threads and tightening down with your pliers.
Installing a combination shower head:
- First, locate your water diverter.
- Attach the diverter to the shower arm and tighten.
- Next, attach the fixed-mount shower head onto the end of the water diverter.
- Tighten it down as much as possible.
- After that, follow the manufacturer’s directions for attaching the hand-held shower mount to the shower.
- Next, connect the flexible shower hose to the hand-held shower mount and the water diverter.
- Tighten it down as much as possible.
- Place the shower head into the mount.
- Turn on the water and check for leaks.
- Finally, divert the water from the fixed shower head to the hand-held shower head and check for leaks.
